The cost of following Jesus

This week at my house we started riding our minibike again, it hadn’t been ridden for a couple of years, so it had some mechanical issues. One of the issues was there was a build up in the carburetor, so when you adjust the throttle if you hesitate and do not give it gas it will stall.  This experience made me think of a story in the Bible. Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”  Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”  Matthew 8:18‭-‬22 In my Bible the subheading for these verses is the cost of following Jesus. These men who Jesus asked to follow Him thought the cost of following was too high a price to pay, because they might be following Him for many years. If they would have followed Him they would have turned their lives upside down, judging by the other disciples, they would have been persecuted and killed for their beliefs. He saw their nature and that they had the strength to do this, but they did not have the belief to trust and follow Him. So this week let’s remember these two people and remember that they hesitated and made excuses, let’s not make excuses, let’s go all in with Jesus no excuses.
